Career Background

2021–2022

In the last two years, I worked as Technical Writer at a company which develops CNC related software for post-processing, controller emulation and verification, and customizes the included macros for their customers. In this position, I updated and developed various types of documentation for different products: user and installation guides, support documents, checklists, tutorials, release notes etc. Additionally, my job included tasks of an Instructional Design role: I developed and administrated three comprehensive online courses for different products (including the integrated programming language). The training content consists of learning videos, infographics, descriptions, tutorials (including programming examples) and quizzes. I learned a lot about different stages of the CNC machining process and the involved programming languages (APT/CL toolpath code, ISO/NC code for different controllers like Fanuc, Siemens and Heidenhain). This includes also the proprietary programming language for translating the toolpath language into machine language, and vice versa.

2019–2020

I relocated from Germany to the U.S. I continued my studies and learned more about technical writing, software localization and internationalization (translation) and business analysis (BABOK guide). I started to work as a freelancer and created this website.

2011–2019

I worked in the training department of a German IT company in Dortmund for 7 years, first as trainee, then as technical trainer and instructional designer. I learned a lot during this time: from IT basics to IT service management theory (ITIL) and tools (e.g. BMC Remedy and ServiceNow); from technical training and writing to project management; and many other IT-related topics.

In collaboration with two colleagues, I had the opportunity to write a book, which was published in 2015. It is about employee’s private mobile devices at the workplace. The book covers different areas of the topic, for instance different operating systems, legal questions, security, mobile device management.

Additionally, I continued my studies.

2011

I began studying the master program “eEducation—Education and Media” at the FernUniversität in Hagen (Germany’s state distance learning university). The first module resulted in my first blog and my growing interest in information technology. I also worked as a freelance translator (mainly for Italian) for an online shop. I translated the product descriptions and the corresponding metadata from German to Italian and English.

2008–2010

I did my teacher traineeship at two schools in Dortmund. It is equivalent to 2 years of teaching experience. I graduated with the Second State Examination which is the German teaching license. Although I’m a licensed language teacher for middle and high schools in Germany, I decided to pursue another career path.

2007

After my graduation, I continued my education at the University Duisburg-Essen by taking some courses from the “German as a second language—intercultural pedagogy” program.

I also worked part-time in the sales back-office of an energy company.

2000–2007

I studied “Teaching English and Italian as a second language”, with a major in linguistics. I studied two semesters abroad in Italy with the Erasmus program. I graduated with the First State Examination for teachers, which is a German university degree that has been replaced with the Master of Education degree shortly after my graduation. It is equivalent to a Master’s degree.
